Speech by CSO(5) Hafiza Bte Ahssan, Commanding Officer of Dunearn Corps, on Campfire Night, 17 June 2005

Good evening to our Guest-of-Honour, Mr Raja, teachers, parents, officers, ex-members, members of the other UGs, and campers. Thanks for spending your precious Friday night with us right here for our Annual Campfire 2005. I hope all of you have been enjoying yourselves so far.

Let me just give a brief introduction of St. John Ambulance Brigade. SJAB is a voluntary and non-profit organization. Our mottoes are: 'Pro Fide' and 'Pro Ulitate Hominum' which translated into English means 'For The Faith' and 'For The service Of mankind'. The eight points of the St. John Ambulance cross signify characteristics which are observant, tactful, resourceful, dexterous, explicit, discriminating, persevering and sympathetic. We hope to inculcate these values in each of our members.

Dunearn SJAB has been established way back in 1957. We will be commemorating our SJAB Day at the end of this month and this will mark our 48th anniversary. In May, 11 of our Sec 4 members had successfully ROD from SJAB. Besides the annual public duties performed during school functions, our members were also involved in a National event. The Sec 4 members provided first aid duty for the Chingay parade. For the second half of this year, 4 of our Sec 2 members will be participating in the Inter-Corps First Aid Quiz. Our members will also be sent for a Civil Defence course, the National Heritage Trail and the NCOC at the end of the year. Hopefully, there will be more courses and activities for our members in the second half of 2005.

The objectives of having this camp are to instill a spirit of camaraderie, to give an opportunity for our potential leaders to explore their insights and to gain an invaluable experience through the camp. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my congratulations to our Sec 4 members especially to our 5 Cadet Leaders namely, Chairman of this camp, CL Lim Weiting and CL Ivy Zhang, Campfire and Games I/C, CL Gan Shanling, Discipline I/C, CL Xing Yiling and Safety I/C, CL Ngoh Him Lim for all their hard work in making this camp a success. Not forgetting our Corp Superintendent, CSO(3) Chua Cheng Chian, for always guiding all of us in the planning of this camp. To all our campers, hopefully this camp will leave an impact on all our trainees and wonderful memories are formed despite all the tough training and punishments. May long and everlasting friendships blossom through this camp. All the motivation and concern for one another has certainly brought all of you closer together.

We hope that all our members will graduate at the end of their 4 or 5 years from St. John with a sense of pride, honour and accomplishment. At the end of their 4 or 5 years with us, hopefully they had gained skills and knowledge which will be useful and applicable for their future. I will like to end my speech with a saying which I acquired from one of my honourable officers who is not here today. I believe this may sound familiar to ex-members from the same batch as me. Life affords no greater responsibility, no greater privilege than the proper nurturing of the next generation. Til then, sit back and hope you will enjoy the rest of tonight’s campfire.

Thank You.
